I am a PhD student in Ethnomusicology at the University of Texas at Austin. I have conducted research on Black music and social movements in Recife, Brazil since 2009. My main research interests are Black/Afro-Diasporic music, resistance, and human rights in Brazil, Latin America, and the US with a particular focus on applied ethnomusicology, cultural citizenship and appropriation, musical geography, Black feminist theory, and music and health, and colonial and postcolonial Lusophone soundscapes. I received a M.A. in Pan African Studies from Syracuse University (2010) and completed my M.M. in Ethnomusicology at the University of Texas at Austin in 2012. My master’s report is entitled “Critical Reflections on Applied Ethnomusicology and Activist Scholarship.” I have forthcoming publications in both the United States and Brazil. In 2011-2012, I served as Assistant Editor of the Latin American Music Review. I am currently the Ethnomusicology Colloquia Representative for AGEMS (Association of Graduate Ethnomusicology and Musicology Students). At UT, I have taught the History of Rock and Introduction to Traditional Music in World Cultures. As a musician, I play Brazilian 7-string guitar, cavaquinho, bass, and Cuban tres with different Brazilian and Latin groups in Austin.
